Abstract

Purpose: General practitioners (GPs) play a central role in primary healthcare systems worldwide. However, rapid demographic, technological, and policy changes pose significant challenges to the sustainability of general practice. This study aimed to examine the projected challenges and opportunities facing general practitioners in primary healthcare delivery over the coming decades.

Methods: A structured literature synthesis was conducted using semantic search techniques across academic databases, including Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex. Relevant publications addressing workforce, system, financial, technological, and professional dimensions of general practice were screened.

Results: Workforce shortages emerged as the most consistently reported challenge. Opportunities included adoption of digital health technologies and collaborative care models.

Conclusion: Strategic workforce planning, digital integration, and policy support are essential.
